Gentlemen Broncos (2009)

Now I know my movie review list is begining to look like that of a pre-teen midwest girls locker door and I do appologize, but Gentlemen Broncos came out last year around Septemeber and I've been passing by it now and again on the DVD racks. It stars young Benjamin who is an aspiring sci-fi novelist that goes to a writing camp one summer and meets his hero and famous author Ronald Chevalier (played by the great Jemaine Clement) He offers up one of his Novellas "Yeast Lords" in a surprise publishing contest at the camp and of course chaos insues. Basic themes I fell in love with include, rustic wear, 80's chic, sci-fi fan fare, pastels and more even more pastels. Shots from the film and some etsy items that fit in below:

Can you tell that this film was directed (and half written) by the lovely Jared Hess? His movies do have that twinge that tends to rub some people the wrong way, but he always wins me over with his credit intros. This time an array of sci-fi cover art was displayed infront of some amazingly detailed backdrops. Check out the trailor here to get the full intro expreience. My official rating is a 4 out of 5. Started at a 3 for being a clean cut well written weirdo film and added a star for being cocaine for the vintage lovers eyes. Nerdy woodland creature art and 80's throwbacks galore.

Movie Days: Youth In Revolt

Youth In Revolt (2009)

This one surprised me. I'm not usually surprised. Though I never read the Book (I'm a movie first, book second kind of girl) I have to admit that the trailers for this film were giving me a lukewarm feeling. Even the cover art still confuses me but Youth in Revolt ended up to be hilariously writer, awkwardly romantic and a really awesome film. It stars Michael Cera as Nick Twisp, a shy romantic with a lack of love in his life. Thankfully though, a meet-cute brings him together with the very chic Sheeni Saunders and chaos ensues as Nick fights tooth and nail to stay with her. He even goes the lengths of creating an alternate ego to play out all the diabolical-ness. Another thing I should admit is that I'm a sucker for Cera so this film already had a 3 heart rating in my brain before I ever watched it. The extra heart is for a combination of great writing, a wardrobe department I'd give free hugs to, an intellectual play on obsessive love/overly emotional coupling and they bought me with an endless list of featured actors which included Zach Galifanakis ....

Inception (2010)

Went with my lovely friend Cindi on a barly planned cinema setion to see this lovely piece of brain bending work. I'm gunna say it out front... I gave this movie the highest rating I could muster. Yes it was THAT good but first some visual inspiration:

Now I know what you're thinking, "but Danny that's mathmatically impossible!" Well to keep you from throwing me under the bus here, let me just say that there is only one other movie I've given this rating. That movie is Cloverfield. For a movie to get an impossible rating there needs to be impossible standards. When life's elements all work out perfectly to prepare your brain and your emotions to absorb such a situation, and that's exactly what has happend here. Now of course your experience is guaranteed to be different, but I promise you it's worth seeing once...but then again I say that about everything don't I.
